When planting lemongrass in pots one of the best things you can do for your plant is to harvest it frequently as this encourages new growth. If your window sill doesn t provide enough light it is necessary to get a fluorescent lamp and place it close to the plant. Harvesting involves cutting it with a sharp knife flush to the surface of the soil. For the best success try using seedling trays with a plastic dome to contain moisture and warmth.

It prefers full sunlight and warmer temperatures providing plenty of harvestable plant material with little care other than watering and periodic fertilizing. Lemon grass is not difficult to grow indoors where its graceful gray green leaves make it an attractive houseplant as well as a flavorful addition to recipes. The problem is they also require high humidity and a soil temperature of roughly 70 degrees to thrive. In cold climates lemongrass should be started indoors to ensure that it has time to mature in a short growing season.
